This article provides important background information regarding pharmacogenomics (PGx), key definitions, an overview of important legislation affecting PGx data, discussion of key stakeholders and candidate patient groups for PGx testing. There is also some discussion of evidence supporting implementation in patients with various conditions or taking certain medications. Participants will also see application of the content and concepts in a case study.

1. Define general terms related to pharmacogenomics (PGx).

2. Describe the potential impact of PGx on various types of patients.

3. Identify at least two resources that pharmacists might use to answer questions specific to PGx.

4. Describe challenges and opportunities with PGx testing.

5. Explain steps pharmacists can take to develop and implement a pharmacogenomics service offering.
